Who you can talk to, what the 5 free messages get you, what Premium and tokens add, the settings that change what arrives in a chat, and what happens to everything you type.

Short answer 5 free messages

Candy AI chat is a messenger with AI characters: you pick a ready-made character, a creator's licensed digital twin or one you built yourself, and it replies in role. A free account gets 5 messages in total, across all characters. Premium makes text unlimited, and typing never costs tokens; voice messages, calls, images and video do.

Whether you know it as the Candy AI girlfriend, the Candy AI girls, an AI GF or simply the Candy AI chatbot, it is one feature: a one-to-one conversation with a character that stays in role, with pictures, voice and video on top for tokens. This guide is built from Candy AI's help center, plans page, character pages, terms and privacy notice, read on October 2, 2026, plus screenshots of the chat from September 2026. We have no paid account, so where Candy AI doesn't publish how something works, we say so.

Who you can chat with

Candy AI's homepage promises "over 100 different characters"; its anime and boyfriend pages say "hundreds". Our own count of the public sitemap on October 2, 2026 found 168 girlfriend, 73 anime and 12 boyfriend profiles. They fall into three groups:

  • Ready-made characters, Candy AI's own cast, found on the homepage, the Explore page and the Discover feed.
  • Creator digital twins. The Candy Creators page listed 13 creators, each twin made "with the full consent of the creator" according to the help center, and each profile labeled AI-generated and fictional. Four of them also lead Candy Shorts series: see Candy Shorts digital twins.
  • Your own characters, built in the character creator. Only these get a choice of Classic or Roleplay chat mode, and the help center warns that switching is permanent.

Exclusive Characters, a smaller fourth group, unlock for a set number of tokens (the help center's example is 200). Characters can also disappear after reworks, moderation or licensing changes, and the terms allow de-listing with no refund.

How Candy AI chat works, step by step

  1. Create an account and confirm you are over 18; depending on where you live, Candy AI may ask for more verification.
  2. Pick a character and type. Messages can run to 3,000 characters, and the character answers in role.
  3. Ask for more than text. Under the message box, "Show me the scene" offers Image and Video; creator profiles have an Ask button with starters such as "Show me…". Both use tokens.
  4. Call, if you want to hear the voice. Character pages offer a phone call at "3 tk/min (beta price)". It needs a microphone.
  5. If replies start repeating, the help center suggests regenerating the reply, changing the topic or adding context.

The chat screen: conversation on the left, the character's profile on the right (September 2026).

In September 2026 the screen looked like any messenger: a searchable list of conversations on the left, the thread in the middle and the character's profile on the right, with photos, a short bio and attributes such as occupation, hobbies and personality. Ready-made characters answered with actions in italics and dialogue in plain text, while some badged Candy Original texted in short lowercase bursts. A New Group button put several characters in one thread; Candy AI doesn't publish how many a group holds or which plan it needs.

Two limits are worth knowing. The help center says "AI characters cannot initiate conversations on their own", so a character won't open a conversation with you. And Shorts are "separate from your chat conversations": nothing you say in a chat changes an episode of Candy Shorts.

Five messages is a taste, not a plan; the terms call it "a maximum of 5 messages to AI Characters", counted across every character. Premium costs $3.99 a month on the annual plan (billed $47.88), $8.99 a month quarterly (billed $26.97) or $13.99 month to month, renews automatically, adds 100 tokens on each monthly date and also covers Candy Shorts. What costs tokens in Candy AI chat

The help center's rule fits in one line: "Regular chatting doesn't cost tokens." Everything else draws on your balance, and the chat itself stays usable at zero:

  • Voice: listening to a voice message, and calls at "3 tk/min (beta price)", shown on a ready-made character's page and on the creator profiles we checked.
  • Images, charged per image. More in the image generator guide.
  • Video: an image from the chat turned into a clip, or "a 5-second video of this exact moment" for 12 tokens. More in the video generator guide.
  • Gifts for Romance Mode companions, from 5 tokens for a red rose to 295.
  • Packs from a character's profile, covered in Candy AI Private Content.

Candy AI doesn't publish what an image or a voice message costs, and token packs are sold on candy.ai/tokens, behind sign-in. The only official dollar figure is the referral offer, 200 tokens described as "a $20 value", roughly 10 cents a token. For scale, Premium's 100 monthly tokens buy about 33 minutes of calls, or eight 5-second scene videos.

Realistic mode, the image toggle and the missing intensity slider

SettingWhat it doesWhere and who
"Realistic" chat modeCharacters send photos, voice notes and videos at random times, unaskedOff via the toggles behind the icon next to the gift icon, at the bottom of the chat
Image generation toggleOn by default; off removes the "Show me…" prompts, and no tokens go on imagesPremium only, in the Ask button's menu
Chat intensity"Candy.ai does not have a dedicated 'chat intensity' slider"Steer with your messages, roleplay instructions, the character's description and regenerated replies

Because photos, voice and video are what tokens pay for, the first two settings double as spending controls. Without a slider, how mild or adult a conversation gets depends on the character and on what you write, within the rules in Candy AI NSFW rules.

Memory, personas and clone chats

The homepage promises "memory retention". The help center is more concrete: memory is tied to each chat. Reset Chat or Delete Chat clears the conversation together with its memory, there is no option to clear the history but keep the memory, and resetting also restarts relationship progress and streaks.

The bigger tools are listed under Premium Plus, "our newest subscription tier": 20 memory slots, 5 clone chats, user personas, chat customization and live audio, plus 330 tokens a month instead of 100. A clone chat copies a conversation so you can branch the story without changing the original; a persona, set under My Profile and Settings, describes you to the characters. Premium Plus has no public price, and Candy AI doesn't say whether regular Premium gets any of these.

Some companions also run on Romance Mode, with relationship levels from Stranger to Soulmate that unlock new locations and outfits. Live Action, a "Premium-only, token-gated feature" on select characters, has levels too: you "earn XP by chatting", and an older help article says it works only on mobile.

Deleted chats are gone

The help center says accidentally deleted conversations cannot be recovered, and deleting a chat also wipes what the character remembered from it.

Privacy: what happens to your Candy AI chats

Candy AI's girlfriend page says it "never shares or sells your information" and offers optional two-factor authentication. One line there calls conversations "encrypted end-to-end"; the same page's FAQ describes encryption "in transit using TLS 1.2+", and the terms show why the stronger claim doesn't fit:

  • Moderation. If automated controls flag something, the terms say EverAI "or authorized partners may access and manually review the flagged content", and communications may be monitored "as part of quality assurance".
  • Training. The terms license user content to EverAI for training its AI models, and the privacy notice allows "human review of de-identified and/or anonymized interactions".
  • Third parties. Message content may reach "third-party LLM providers and/or hosters", and data may be transferred outside the EU, including to the United States.
  • Retention. Account data is kept for three years after your last activity, and account content may be removed after periods of inactivity.

The practical rule: write nothing you wouldn't want a moderator to read, and leave out real names, addresses and workplaces. More on data and the discreet "EverAI" billing in is Candy AI safe.

The rules of the conversation

Chat is for adults only, and the Blocked Content Policy and Community Guidelines apply to every message, image and video. They ban content resembling minors, non-consensual content, images that resemble real people, deepfakes, self-harm, violence, drug material, animal abuse, hate speech and illegal content, and trying to "jailbreak" the service counts as a violation too. If a message is flagged wrongly, the help center explains how to report it for review; account closures are "always made by human reviewers". Generated content is for personal, non-commercial use. And the terms are plain about what this is: "for entertainment purposes only", "not intended as emotional or other forms of support".

Where to start

Five free messages are enough to see whether a character's writing suits you, if you spend them in one conversation. If it does, the annual plan is the cheapest way to unlimited text, and the token-priced extras are where the bill grows. If you came for the series rather than the chat, Candy Shorts needs none of this; every other tool is in the Candy AI tools overview.

Frequently asked questions

Is Candy AI chat free?

Partly. A free account can send up to 5 messages in total, across all characters, as both Candy AI's help center and its terms state. After that you need Premium, from $3.99 a month on the annual plan, which makes text messages unlimited. Typing never costs tokens.

Does Candy AI chat cost tokens?

Typing doesn't: "regular chatting doesn't cost tokens", the help center says. Listening to voice messages, phone calls (3 tokens a minute, beta), images, video and gifts for Romance Mode companions all draw on your token balance. Premium includes 100 tokens a month.

Can you call your Candy AI girlfriend?

Yes. Character pages offer a phone call priced at "3 tk/min (beta price)"; it needs a microphone, and Candy AI labels the feature as beta. Voice messages are the other option, and listening to one costs tokens.

Does Candy AI remember your conversations?

Within a chat, yes: the help center ties memory to each conversation, and resetting or deleting the chat clears it. Premium Plus adds 20 memory slots, 5 clone chats and user personas. Candy AI doesn't publish how much a chat remembers on the standard plans.

Can I chat with Riley Reid or other creators on Candy AI?

Yes, with their licensed AI digital twins. The Candy Creators page listed 13 creators on October 2, 2026, and every twin profile states that the twin and its chats are AI-generated. See Candy Shorts digital twins.

Are Candy AI chats private?

Not in the strict sense. Flagged content can be reviewed by people, de-identified chats may be reviewed to train models, and message content may go to third-party LLM providers. Leave out anything that identifies you; more in is Candy AI safe.

What languages does Candy AI chat in?

The help center says English and French are officially supported; other languages work if you ask the character, but unofficially, and switching language needs a conversation reset. Another help article lists full localization for English, French, German and Spanish, so the articles don't fully agree.
